Above Photographs: German friend Markus Klauer and Randy Gaulke take a break on the St. Mihiel salient. Kürassier Richard (aka Randal) Gaulke at a reenactment.
Randal S. Gaulke's first tour of the WWI battlefields was in July 1986 with Lt. Col. Graham Parker of Flanders Tours--an event that changed his life. Since "catching the bug" he has visited the battlefields almost annually, and he was one of several individuals who organized the WFA-USA battlefield tour in 1998. More recently, he organized a 2005 tour of Germany and France for his reenacting regiment and he led the second half of the Western Front Association, United States Branch's 2007 tour. He is currently marketing a five-day trip to the Meuse-Argonne and St. Mihiel Salients in August 2008. (See introduction on home page.)
When not thinking about the battlefields, Randal reenacts as a member of the 8th Kürassier Regiment. (www.8thkurassier.com) He has also give presentations and has written various articles and translations. Most recently, he has been using his German and his knowledge of the German Army in the Meuse-Argonne to assist Stephen Skinner in his research on the life and death of Frank Luke. Randal is fluent in German, and he is still struggling to learn a little more French.
He is a financial analyst who works in New York City. He and his wife and son live in New Jersey.
